A Brief History Of Solid Fuel Stoves
The first historical record of a fireplace solid cast stove being built, refers to a stove built in 1490, in Alsace France. This stove was made entirely of brick and tile, including the flue. The British were introduced to the idea in the 17th century where they saw them in the Dutch & German communities in the ‘New World’, in Europe there was less coal and greater distances and it is here that the wood burning stove has its origins. In much of England, coal remained cheap, with female and child labour used in the mines, the British continue wastefully to burn coal in open fires, with the exception of their kitchen ranges, to the present day. A stove on the other hand, only allows the air that is required for combustion to be wasted up the chimney, air is conducted around the stove and warms as it passes, as well as the radiated heat leaving via the glass door. Efficiency ratings are usually well over 80%, quartering the average fuel bill.
Before Installation
Fireplace solid fuel stoves, log burners and gas stoves are available in various sizes and a multitude of finishes ranging from more simple ones to those with attractive designs. They serve as main heat source and or can be used along side existing heating in the home. The fireplace solid fuel, wood burning stoves and gas stoves can be installed in living rooms, kitchens ect as long as you can run a flue system. An existing chimney or a new flue or chimney installation must be given a visual inspection to check that it is in good order, clear of obstructions and is of a suitable size and type for the appliance you plan to install. It may be necessary to sweep the flue (which should always be done anyway before fitting a stove or lining a chimney) and also, if necessary do a smoke test to check for gas tightness.
Installation Of Your Stove
When fitting a stove into an existing fireplace, building regulations require that the stove should be on a plinth of non-combustible material extending at least 150mm at the sides and 300mm in front. To fit the stove you will need a register plate this is used to seal off the throat of the fireplace and will prevent debris and drafts, It has the hole for the flue pipe, (flue pipes are supplied with most of the stoves we sell). We supply these on our site just scroll down the page and click on flue and pipe fittings, the register plates are available in 5 & 6 inch sizes, we also supply brackets to support the flue pipe should you require it, all these products may be added to your order this means you have everything you need with one delivery charge.
Helpful Info
Please note the fitting of a CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarm is now a building regulations requirement for a stove installation, we stock these as standard and can be added to your order by clicking the add the carbon monoxide detector on the screen.
What Is The Airwash System On The Stoves?
A stove with an airwash system will tend to have a cleaner more see through window. In non airwash stoves tar is deposited on the window when fuel is burnt (especially wood) darkening the stove glass or making it black. Airwash stoves take in air from above the stove window and pass or 'wash' it over the surface of the window. This helps keeps the flames and gasses in the stove off the window itself as there is a layer of air protecting it, therefore less tar is deposited keeping the window cleaner.
